Digital Storage Converter
Convert between decimal SI storage units (kB, MB, GB, TB) and binary IEC units (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB). The two systems differ because they use different bases for the multiplier.

SI vs IEC: The Full Story
Decimal SI (kB, MB, GB) uses powers of 1000. Binary IEC (KiB, MiB, GiB) uses powers of 1024. Both are legitimate; the difference matters because the ratio grows with magnitude:
| Prefix | Decimal (SI) | Binary (IEC) | Ratio (IEC/SI) |
|---|---|---|---|
| kilo / kibi | 1000 | 1024 | 1.024 |
| mega / mebi | 10⁶ | 2²⁰ = 1,048,576 | 1.048576 |
| giga / gibi | 10⁹ | 2³⁰ | 1.073741824 |
| tera / tebi | 10¹² | 2⁴⁰ | 1.099511627776 |
| peta / pebi | 10¹⁵ | 2⁵⁰ | 1.125899906843 |
| exa / exbi | 10¹⁸ | 2⁶⁰ | 1.152921504607 |
Because the ratio grows with magnitude, a "1 TB" drive shows up as roughly 931 GiB (or "931 GB" if the OS mislabels it) — a difference of about 7%. At the petabyte level, the difference approaches 12.6%.
